I watched SF ballet’s Little Mermaid on Saturday night. I was really, really excited to watch it, especially since Yuan Yuan Tan was dancing the mermaid that night…but I have to say that I was disappointed. Of course the Little Mermaid isn’t the same version as Disney, it was the real version of Little Mermaid, the depressing one…but the ballet made the mermaid seem retarded…almost mentally unstable. She was really pathetic in there…but I guess that was the choreographer’s aim?
The thing that I was really disappointed with was that Yuan Yuan Tan barely danced. There was a lot of acting involved and a lot of upper body movements…but the amount of time she spent dancing on her toes was like…30 minutes at most. BUUUT, I guess that’s what the choreographer intended since the mermaid couldn’t walk that well…?
Anyway, I wish i saw more of YYT dancing…but she really was good. Her movements were so fish like and fluid. I love going to SF ballet…plus sitting at the orchestra section made me feel rich…HAHA. I can’t wait until I watch Romeo and Juliet in May!!
